We love it when residents utilize the studio and community at Praxis. Chelsea did just that! It was so great getting to watch your weaving and print process!
Weaving on: Collin Joining us from: Houston, Texas Tell us about yourself and what led you to the residency? I am a weaver and also manage a fab lab at University of Houston so naturally I’ve been super curious about the TC2. Last summer, a friend told me about Praxis’ digital weaving residency & I applied right away. I am beyond excited to spend the next two weeks investigating this loom! Have you had any previous experience with Digital Weaving or Jacquard? No, none. Any goals for the residency you'd like to share? I like to weave overshot, and my aim is to incorporate these traditional structures into digital imagery. I don’t have much experience with a TC2 though so we will see what happens! Alyssa, it was great to see your drawings come to life! The use of neon yarn was especially fun to see.
Weaving on: Lou Joining us from: Pittsburgh, PA Tell us about yourself and what led you to the residency? I recently finished my MFA at Ohio University - during my time there I visited Praxis during the FRONT Triennial with the Sculpture area. I was really fascinated by the TC2 and the possibilities it had to offer. Have you had any previous experience with Digital Weaving or Jacquard? No Any goals for the residency you'd like to share? Using a number of different tools, I am making physical the email attachments from the massive email dataset released in connection with the downfall of the Enron Corporation during the late 1990s. This consists of a wide range of files: menu templates, corrupted text files, AutoCAD models, and whimsical clip art. So, a goal for this residency was to use digital weaving as a tool to translate these files. It seems that there is so much to explore in terms of what the TC2 is capable of and I have only scratched the surface. I hope to work more with it in the future! Weaving on: Collin Joining us from: Phoenix Arizona Tell us about yourself and what led you to the residency? I am a mixed-media artist from Huntsville, Alabama and an MFA candidate at Arizona State University. My practice engages historically imbued materials with images and language of U.S statecraft, drawing from state and family archives and Black southern folk remedy and storytelling. Experimenting with new acts of contending with history is important to my practice, and I was drawn to Praxis due to the exciting ability to translate archival photography into woven form. Have you had any previous experience with Digital Weaving or Jacquard? No, only traditional floor looms and hand weaving Any goals for the residency you'd like to share? I am excited to experiment with legibility of image and meaning in this new way of making. I want to discover how images and information offer something new in alternate forms. Get in touch with Ari via Instagram @aribarley Rajasi was back for her second residency on Lou! We love to see returning residents come back! Thank you for spending time at Praxis.
Weaving on: Lou Joining us from: Bombay, India Eric, we hope that you were able to accomplish your goal of making things on the TC2 that you can't at home; based on all that you wove, it seems like you did! Hooray!!!
Weaving on: Collin Joining us from: Atlanta, Georgia Tell us about yourself and what led you to the residency? Long story short - I learned to weave two years ago and I've been obsessed with it ever since. Have you had any previous experience with Digital Weaving or Jacquard? I haven't. Any goals for the residency you'd like to share? I want to try so many things! Mainly, I just want to learn about the TC2 loom and do some things I can't do with my 8-harness loom at home. Get in touch with Eric via Instagram @queericq or via email [email protected] Welcome to the Dark Side, Tali (that is- the fiber world! hehehe). Thanks for continuing your weaving journey with us—and who doesn't love a painted warp!?
Weaving on: Lou Tell us about yourself and what led you to the residency? I am a Chicago born and raised nonbinary mixed media fiber artist. Have you had any previous experience with Digital Weaving or Jacquard? In May I graduated from School of the Art Institute of Chicago with an MFA in Painting and Drawing. Despite attending the school for painting, I was drawn to their fiber program as I had just learned to weave from Melissa Cody as her studio assistant. After my first semester taking the Jacquard class, I was hooked and became the first Painting and Drawing student to be the Jacquard Technician Assistant and Teaching Assistant. I am thirsty for all knowledge when it comes to fixing the looms, drafting weave structures, and meeting other fiber artists! Any goals for the residency you'd like to share? I am super excited to have had the honor of Hope Wang and LMRM helping me paint my own warp for the residency. My friend Xingyi Zhao generously showed me some drafting tips so I can begin to experiment with weave structures. I am also excited to spend the time with my perfect angel senior dog who is the ideal weaving companion but was not allowed on school premises. I usually show up to the loom super prepared with files, but after speaking to other artists who weave on a painted warp, I am trying not to over plan and respond to the warp as it advances. Thank you for spending time with us during the member drive & we can't wait to see you again in November!
Weaving on: Lou Joining us from: Ann Arbor, Michigan Tell us about yourself and what led you to the residency? I'm a weaver who has worked with digital Jacquard looms off and on for around 20 years. I learned of the Digital Weaving Residencies at Praxis through Cathryn Amidei and look forward to weaving on the TC2 in the DWL! Have you had any previous experience with Digital Weaving or Jacquard? Yes! I've woven on the TC1 looms at Eastern Michigan (when they had them) and also wove some pieces on a TC1 at another weaver's home in Delray Beach, FL. I've taken workshops from Cathryn Amidei at her home in Ann Arbor as well as at the Jacquard Center in Hendersonville, NC. I've also woven on another weaver's TC2 in her home studio in Arlington, VA. Any goals for the residency you'd like to share? My primary goal for the residency is to reconnect with digital Jacquard weaving and continue to build on my previous knowledge and experiences with digital weaving. I plan to weave new work for my portfolio and for future sales and exhibits. Connect with Jennifer through email ([email protected]) or on Dacebook (www.facebook.com/jennifer.stafford.92) in association with the Ann Arbor Fiber Arts Guild (https://annarborfiberarts.org/) and Florida Tropical Weavers Guild (https://ftwg.org/) Always such a treat when a Praxis alum comes back to visit. Weaving on: Collin Joining us from: Knoxville, Tennessee Tell us about yourself and what led you to the residency? Felicia Francine Dean is designer, artist, and educator at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville in the School of Interior Architecture. Benjamin Sechrest is a time-based media artist specializing in sound and data visualization. Their series of textile weavings link historical studies to technological modes of representation to make visible the hidden stories of Black weavers in the Middle and East TN region. The project merges historical narratives with digital futures by translating their investigation through the process of digital weaving. Have you had any previous experience with Digital Weaving or Jacquard? The Praxis workshop gave us experience with digital weaving prior to the residency. Any goals for the residency you'd like to share? The goal for the residency is to experiment with the current ideas and be open to new directions of how the process will inform the work, to realize the ideas in tangible forms for exhibition. You can find Felicia on Instagram @felicia_francine if you'd like to learn more! LOCAL ALERT!!! Always a pleasure when someone from Cle gets to spend time at the loom. So glad you are using the TC2 in your practice Aja!
Weaving on: Lou Joining us from: Cleveland Heights, Ohio Tell us about yourself and what led you to the residency? Completing the intro to TC2 class earlier this year, and the doors of inspiration and experimentation that opened up when I learned to translate my portrait images into fiber art. Working with the texture and color of single shuttle and triple pick weaves was too exciting to pass up Have you had any previous experience with Digital Weaving or Jacquard? Nope, not before the Intro class Any goals for the residency you'd like to share? Experiment with different weave structures and compositions, blend pattern-making with imagery. Overall get more proficient with weaving files and utilizing color and shape in an impactful way through fiber. You can find Aja on Instagram @joi_shoots or at AjaJoiPhoto.com |
