Thank you, Aoife, for bringing about some wonderful conversations regarding graphics, typography, & weaving and their intersections (and also for bringing this flag tape; it makes an awesome weft!!)
Weaving on: Lou Joining us from: Akron, Ohio (originally Dublin, Ireland) Tell us about yourself and what led you to the residency? I'm an Associate Professor at Kent State University's School of Visual Communication Design, and an interdisciplinary designer/artist. I'm interested in edges, thresholds and boundaries. In particular, in the edges of digital and material, language and landscape, meaning and ambiguity. My work explores the ways that memory operates on our experiences, weaving them into a fragmented inner landscape through which we make sense of ourselves and our relationships to others and the environment. Have you had any previous experience with Digital Weaving or Jacquard? Yes, at Kent State, where I learned first on the TC1 and then TC2. Any goals for the residency you'd like to share? A series of weavings inspired by a Roland Barthes quote “Reading does not consist in stopping the chain of systems, in establishing a truth… it consists in coupling these systems, not according to their finite quantity but according to their plurality…: I pass, I intersect, I articulate, I release, I do not count.” See more of Aoife on Instagram @patterns_and_puzzles or at www.kent.edu/vcd/aoife-mooney

Erica! You are a legend of legends for tying on two warps. We enjoyed how much life your work brought to the DWL. From your words below, "vivid atmospheres of color" is certainly correct!
Weaving on: Collin Joining us from: Bay Area, California Tell us about yourself and what led you to the residency? My practice is about exploring how fiber can express the lived experience. I use autobiographical stories as a foundational place to make and create work from. I embrace vivid atmospheres of color, disintegrated patterns and gravitational cloth as a way to excise the demons living in the dark and expunge them into the saturation of technicolor dreams and manifestations of joy. Have you had any previous experience with Digital Weaving or Jacquard? Yes, I took a digital weaving class in undergrad at California College of the Arts. More recently, I spent 2 years in the Fiber and Material Studies MFA program at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago where I used the TC2 to create much of my work. It is wonderful to have access to this loom again and how special Praxis is for providing that. I am excited to weave again. Any goals for the residency you'd like to share? I would like to make more yardage of extra fringy colorful weaving and really expanding the fringe and floats and push this process. I am experimenting with disintegration and indecipherability of my patterns and color interactions. I am excited to use more colors, more weave structures and materials. So happy you were able to take a small dip in Queen Stinky while you were here (and how refreshing to have another MICA Alum around! lol)
Weaving on: Collin Joining us from: Miami, Florida Tell us about yourself and what led you to the residency? I am a multidisciplinary artist and designer based in Miami, FL. I completed my BFA in Fiber Studies with a Minor in Experimental Fashion at the Maryland Institute College of Art in 2022. I approach creating work through a layering of different processes such as drawing, screen printing, weaving and garment design. I am interested in creating artificial realms inspired by the natural world that allow me to explore ideas of personal mythology, magic realism and ecofeminism. Have you had any previous experience with Digital Weaving or Jacquard? Yes ! when I was an undergraduate student at MICA Any goals for the residency you'd like to share? I want to continue exploring the relationship between drawing and weaving and the loss of visual information that occurs when I translate my drawings into a digital realm. See more of Isabel on Instagram @sirenastudio_ or at isabeloliva.squarespace.com Michèle!!!!! From student to resident! Talk about someone who made the most of their trip - it was exhilarating to see you do much while in Cleveland! We hope you enjoyed your time as much as we enjoyed having you <3
Weaving on: Lou Joining us from: Toronto, Canada Tell us about yourself and what led you to the residency? I am graphic designer by trade, with a love for textiles and fibre that has developed into an artistic career. For the past two years my artistic focus has shifted into working at a larger scale creating installations and wall pieces. I am currently incorporating weaving into my work, and I am fascinated by the infinite possibilities that weaving with the TC2 has offered and how it has somehow brought together both of my passions: design and textiles. Have you had any previous experience with Digital Weaving or Jacquard? Living in Toronto gave me the opportunity to learn and work on the TC2 loom that was available at Artscape Launchpad. Since 2022, I was able to learn hands-on and from observing other member weavers there, until its closure in September of 2023. I also had the opportunity to learn from Cathryn Amidei in 2023, when I attended her Jacquard Design I and II online courses, as well as the Intro to TC2 workshop she facilitated at Praxis that same year. Any goals for the residency you'd like to share? My work explores concepts like impermanence, fragility, ecology, conservation and our interconnection with nature. I use photographs taken of my natural surroundings, that I then intervene with different techniques or by combining unconventional weft materials when weaving, with the aim to bring awareness to nature’s fragility. I hope to continue these explorations, experimenting with different weft materials like cables and wires. See more of Michèle on Instagram @michele_guevara or at micheleguevara.ca |
