Weaving on: Lou Joining us from: Chicago, IL Tell us about yourself and what led you to the residency? I utilize pattern-based tapestry as a drawing technique to make weavings about the connections between indigo and blue water, our changing shorelines, and the ways water reflects the sky. The woven waveforms are real and imagined—the beating of the loom akin to the ebb/flow of the tides. In drafting patterns, I create my own waves and ripples, translating my observations of the sun and moon sparkling off the water. The Jacquard allows me to convert my drawings directly into files for weaving, enabling me to be more experimental, and I’ve returned to drawing methods I haven’t used in ages. Have you had any previous experience with Digital Weaving or Jacquard? I took an independent study in Grad school with Christy Matson. Any goals for the residency you'd like to share? My files fall into three categories—Land forms, Reflections in the Water, and Human Environmental Impact. If I’m honest, I’m most excited about the sumi ink drawings I’ve been manipulating and converting into files for the Reflections in the Water set. They’re really different than the ones I’ve been making on my floor loom and have me wondering about the possibilities when I get back to my studio post residency! Weaving on: Collin Joining us from: Western North Carolina Tell us about yourself and what led you to the residency? I'm currently working on a new body of work including woven and quilted pieces that are informed by growing up in the deep South. I'm excited to be returning to Praxis to push this work technically and to have the power to both reference traditional weaving patterns while manipulating structure and through imagery. Have you had any previous experience with Digital Weaving or Jacquard? I came to Praxis for the first time last May, and learned how to weave on the Jacquard with Deborah Bull during my time at SCAD in undergrad. My floor loom work over the last few years has largely been hand-picked, so it feels exhilarating (and much more efficient!) to work with the TC2. Any goals for the residency you'd like to share? Several of the pieces I'm working on will be cut and pieced together, in coverlet and Courthouse Steps-style patterns. I've made a few really large patterns with the shapes outlined in the weave to make cutting and sewing fairly precise. That being said, the last time I was here, I came in with so many ideas and felt more drawn to experimenting with unexpected things that happened while weaving. I'm looking forward to the loom surprising me again and following my nose. Weaving on: Collin Joining us from: Baltimore, MD Tell us about yourself and what led you to the residency? I'm an artist exploring the textual nature of textiles. Textiles contain a record of their own making, an inscription of the values held by their maker and beholder. Stories change with every writer and with every reader. Right now I'm investigating how the internet plays a role in this game of telephone. Jacquard weaving is closely related to computers-- not only is the process computer-driven, but the Jacquard loom's punch cards informed the first computers. I figured if I want my research to expand to digital spaces, using a digital way of making follows. Have you had any previous experience with Digital Weaving or Jacquard? I initially explored Jacquard weaving during my MFA at the Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia. Since then I've been building weaving files and dreaming about weaving them! Praxis is a great opportunity to put all of this research together. Any goals for the residency you'd like to share? I'm currently exploring how the infinite scroll of the internet relates to the finite scroll of a woven object. I'm interested in how the internet relays and transforms information. My research is grounded in the Antique Pattern Library, a digital archive of pre-internet hobby craft instruction books, and Susan Howe's /Spontaneous Particulars/, a poem/essay/manifesto about irl archival research. I'm interested in the friction between the material and digital worlds, and how that friction can emerge in the world as poetry, as objects. Weaving on: Collin Joining us from: Palo Alto, California Tell us about yourself and what led you to the residency? I've been eager to come back to Praxis DWL since my first residency in 2021. I'm delighted to return in 2023 for another experience with the TC2. Have you had any previous experience with Digital Weaving or Jacquard? My only digital weaving experience is from my two Praxis residencies, though I've woven on traditional looms for almost 30 years. Any goals for the residency you'd like to share? Much of my work is motivated by the intimate, tactile relationship between textiles and the human body. I'm excited to explore that relationship on the TC2, integrating bodily imagery with woven structures and textures. I hope to push some of the ways I wove photographic and abstracted images of the body in 2021 even further, and explore new ways of considering color, gravity, and dimensionality. Weaving on: Collin Joining us from: Brooklyn, NY Tell us about yourself and what led you to the residency? I'm excited to work on creating woven pieces for two projects: “Ancient Futures” & “Algorithmic Textures”. “Algorithmic Textures” is an on-going study and practice of creating digital textures using code-based languages and transforming them from digital matter to physical objects through various mediums including print, textiles, and paper sculptures. Specifically, I am exploring patterns with a focus on optical illusions, repetition, and perception through mathematical formulas and logic to entice a sense of algorithmic rhythms. I’m excited to explore new processes with the TC2! Have you had any previous experience with Digital Weaving or Jacquard? I am a generalist on the textile side, and this will be my first time using the TC2. Any goals for the residency you'd like to share? As a process oriented artist, I often work through visuals and designs by responding to the nature of the materials I am working with. This is why I am so excited by the TC2 loom, as a system that is part digital with a component of human to machine interaction, with the ability to inject moments of human decision making. I'm excited to have some dedicated time and space to make new work. Praxis is a hub for looms and community -- a unique location to focus deeply on projects and weaving explorations. Have you had any previous experience with Digital Weaving or Jacquard? Yes, I've woven jacquard textiles before -- thanks to Kent State University and Praxis Fiber Workshop. Any goals for the residency you'd like to share? ~ Paint my warp with undersea imagery & dye skeins for weft. ~ Create a collaborative artwork with an oceanographer. ~ Explore whether warp & weft can be equals. ~ Weave delicate structures/patterns in 45 e.p.i.
