Hey Katie!! It was a treat to see all of the structure changes contained within your weavings - we are hyped to see how the TC2 changes your practice at home.
Weaving on: Lou Joining us from: Chicago, IL Tell us about yourself and what led you to the residency? I utilize pattern-based tapestry as a drawing technique to make weavings about the connections between indigo and blue water, our changing shorelines, and the ways water reflects the sky. The woven waveforms are real and imagined—the beating of the loom akin to the ebb/flow of the tides. In drafting patterns, I create my own waves and ripples, translating my observations of the sun and moon sparkling off the water. The Jacquard allows me to convert my drawings directly into files for weaving, enabling me to be more experimental, and I’ve returned to drawing methods I haven’t used in ages. Have you had any previous experience with Digital Weaving or Jacquard? I took an independent study in Grad school with Christy Matson. Any goals for the residency you'd like to share? My files fall into three categories—Land forms, Reflections in the Water, and Human Environmental Impact. If I’m honest, I’m most excited about the sumi ink drawings I’ve been manipulating and converting into files for the Reflections in the Water set. They’re really different than the ones I’ve been making on my floor loom and have me wondering about the possibilities when I get back to my studio post residency!
