Thank you both for bringing a very cool project to Praxis! It is great to see the ways in which the TC2 could support your research. Long live the overshot samples!!!!!!!!!!
Weaving on: Collin Joining us from: Knoxville, Tennessee Tell us about yourself and what led you to the residency? Felicia Francine Dean is designer, artist, and educator at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville in the School of Interior Architecture. Benjamin Sechrest is a time-based media artist specializing in sound and data visualization. Their series of textile weavings link historical studies to technological modes of representation to make visible the hidden stories of Black weavers in the Middle and East TN region. The project merges historical narratives with digital futures by translating their investigation through the process of digital weaving. Have you had any previous experience with Digital Weaving or Jacquard? The Praxis workshop gave us experience with digital weaving prior to the residency. Any goals for the residency you'd like to share? The goal for the residency is to experiment with the current ideas and be open to new directions of how the process will inform the work, to realize the ideas in tangible forms for exhibition. You can find Felicia on Instagram @felicia_francine if you'd like to learn more!

LOCAL ALERT!!! Always a pleasure when someone from Cle gets to spend time at the loom. So glad you are using the TC2 in your practice Aja!
Weaving on: Lou Joining us from: Cleveland Heights, Ohio Tell us about yourself and what led you to the residency? Completing the intro to TC2 class earlier this year, and the doors of inspiration and experimentation that opened up when I learned to translate my portrait images into fiber art. Working with the texture and color of single shuttle and triple pick weaves was too exciting to pass up Have you had any previous experience with Digital Weaving or Jacquard? Nope, not before the Intro class Any goals for the residency you'd like to share? Experiment with different weave structures and compositions, blend pattern-making with imagery. Overall get more proficient with weaving files and utilizing color and shape in an impactful way through fiber. You can find Aja on Instagram @joi_shoots or at AjaJoiPhoto.com Monica, you WOVE SO MUCH!!!!!!!!!!! We hope that you were able to get some rest after all of that!
Weaving on: Collin Joining us from: Austin, Texas Tell us about yourself and what led you to the residency? I had my first experience with the TC2 at the School of The Art Institute At Chicago where I was in the Fibers program. I started working more consistently with the TC2 only in my third semester onwards and knowing the limited access to this machine after graduation led me to apply to the Praxis program. Painting has been my major art practice but I have been very drawn to the tactile quality and textures of a textile. A desire to bring both medium together in my own language led to my current work. Have you had any previous experience with Digital Weaving or Jacquard? Yes, at School of The Art Institute At Chicago. Any goals for the residency you'd like to share? I have plans to weave approximately 25+yards. Connect with Monica at monicamohnot.com or on Instagram @monica.mohnot It was SO great to have you back, Kira! Further proof that our community is quite small and interwoven, and no doubt we will see you again soon!
Weaving on: Lou Joining us from: Urbana, Illinois Tell us about yourself and what led you to the residency? I make large scale fiber sculptures on backstrap, floor looms, and digital jacquard looms. Both enacting and deconstructing immigrant experience, weaving in my studio practice is about contextualizing my family’s narrative of simultaneously performing and disavowing cultural expectations, misrecognitions, and appropriations within larger U.S. and global histories. I was fortunate enough to speak on some of these issues at the Praxis Digital Weaving Conference last summer. After the conference, I knew I wanted to spend more time with these amazing folx! Have you had any previous experience with Digital Weaving or Jacquard? Yes! Josh Faught and Lia Cook at California College of the Arts were my first teachers on the TC1 loom. Since then, I've had the privilege of setting up two TC2 looms at CCA, weaving on the looms at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and flying to Bilbao, Spain to weave at the Basque BioDesign Center on their TC2 loom. Any goals for the residency you'd like to share? I largely use digital jacquard looms to sample ideas. Often these ideas end up in the final woven composition, usually cut-up and tied into a larger fiber sculpture. Three projects I want to start to build during this residency: the Clitorati Codex, structures for multi-layer weaving with bioplastics, and a few bling-y details that I'm planning to add into a public art installation with the city of Berkeley, CA next month! Find Kira on their site at kiradominguezhultgren.com or Instagram @kiradominguezhultgren I will never forget the beautiful giant cartoon you were working from taped up on the loom; it is wonderful to see everyone's process + way of making. Thank you for sharing with us & so glad you could be here serendipitously with David!
Weaving on: Collin Joining us from: Croton on Hudson, New York Tell us about yourself and what led you to the residency? I am an educator, designer, and fiber artist based in the lower Hudson Valley. I fell in love with weaving as an undergrad at the Rhode Island School of Design, which led me down a path of designing fabrics for the high-end residential textile industry. In 2007 I joined the faculty at the Fashion Institute of Technology, where I am an Associate Professor. I am currently on a sabbatical from FIT with the purpose of undertaking intensive study and practice using the TC-2 to produce a body of work inspired by my Grandparents and Great Grandparents immigration to Canada from Eastern Europe. Have you had any previous experience with Digital Weaving or Jacquard? I consider myself an expert in Jacquard Design. I worked for manufacturers for more than 14 years before I started teaching weaving and Jacquard at FIT. In 2021, FIT purchased a narrow width TC2 on which I've had a few opportunities to weave. I have also taken Cathryn’s classes which have opened my mind to a completely new way of seeing digital weaving. I am so grateful to everyone at Praxis and FIT for making this opportunity possible. Any goals for the residency you'd like to share? I have planned two large scale works, which include painted wefts borrowing from Ikat techniques. While I am experienced with industry-standard software, my goal has been to master using Photoshop to develop design and technical files. Coming to Praxis, feels like the culmination of my sabbatical work. One of the biggest challenges I have faced over the past months is shifting my way of thinking about jacquard from a design and manufacturing perspective. While I hope I can complete my works at the residency, the greatest gift will be if I can expand my idea of what digital weaving is. More of Nomi can be found on Instagram @nomidale David, your personal history & stories about weaving were just as interesting as your work--thank you for sharing! And so happy you and Nomi could be here together.
Weaving on: Collin Joining us from: Denver, Colorado Tell us about yourself and what led you to the residency? I have always woven and wanted to explore this new technology and how it could move me forward in the expansion of my work as a fiber artist. Have you had any previous experience with Digital Weaving or Jacquard? I worked with a 20 Harness AVL Compu-Dobby for years designing textiles for both the residential and contract markets. I also designed jacquards for these markets. I wrote the curriculum to teach jacquard design for the Textile Surface Design Dept at FIT in NYC. Any goals for the residency you'd like to share? I want to integrate new weaves I developed on my AVL dobby loom into the art work that I created for this residency. Connect with David on Instagram at @dvbart_design |
