Susie, your use of double weave with four shuttles made it fascinating to see the color blending possibilities!
Weaving on: Lou Joining us from: Rochester, NY Tell us about yourself and what led you to the residency? I am an artist and long-time weaver that has a deep appreciation for shaft loom weaving. The residency gives me an opportunity to take some of my ideas to another level. I am happy to see where this adventure leads me. Have you had any previous experience with Digital Weaving or Jacquard? I worked as a jacquard upholstery designer for over a decade and have continued to work on jacquard software for collaborations and to plan my complex shaft loom projects. Any goals for the residency you'd like to share? To create a new body of work and to see how I respond to working on the TC2 loom. A sparkle explosion just happened in the DWL studio!! It was so amazing to have our very own Jessica Pinsky as a resident and even more amazing to watch this gold and silver warp be woven!
Weaving on: Collin Joining us from: Cleveland, OH Tell us about yourself and what led you to the residency? I am the Executive Director of Praxis Fiber Workshop and a practicing artist here in Cleveland. I have had a few quick opportunities to weave on our TC2s but never had the chance to do a full residency until now. Cleveland Institute of Art has invited me to be part of a 5 person exhibit and they supported this residency and the production of new work. Have you had any previous experience with Digital Weaving or Jacquard? Yes! However, without meeting Cathryn Amidei and working with her to develop the Digital Weaving Lab, I wouldn't have sought the tool out for my own practice. I normally paint my warps and use a plain weave structure. It has taken over three years to see how using the TC2 could support my practice. I have learned so much!! Any goals for the residency you'd like to share? YES. I came into this residency with the goal of making a singular weaving. This consists of two panels, each 16' x 44" that will be sewn together to create a large rectangle. I have always wanted to make an all gold weaving and with the capabilities of the TC2 I dreamt of a large gold-scape that slowly shifts to silver. I achieved this with an end and end gold and silver warp and mostly double weave structures. The piece will be suspended in the air and viewed from both sides! It was interesting to learn about captcha images and watch you tackle that 36 yard warp!!
Weaving on: Lou Joining us from: Stoughton, WI Tell us about yourself and what led you to the residency? I graduated in 2023 from SAIC's Fiber & Material Studies program, which is blessed with three (!!) TC2 looms. That's how I became addicted to the funnest, most instantly gratifying, and totally impractical machine! My background is in photography, and my weaving interests are mostly new finding ways to articulate photographic content on the loom. I jokingly called myself "the human inkjet printer" in an Instagram post and it kind of stuck - the past few years I've been developing a system of weaving in CMYK (cyan, magenta, yellow, and black) yarn, the same colors a printer uses. Have you had any previous experience with Digital Weaving or Jacquard? I'm a previous Praxis resident and have been eagerly awaiting another opportunity to use the looms! When this opportunity came up, I jumped! Any goals for the residency you'd like to share? Since I have previous experience and a set of weaving structures I've been tinkering with, my goals are mostly to get in there and produce. My MFA thesis piece was a nine-by-nine-foot weaving, and I'm hoping to make it a friend. Your woven tintypes turned out amazing!!
Weaving on: Collin Tell us about yourself and what led you to the residency? I knew weaving would forever be a part of my practice when after only the first day of using the TC2, it was making its way into my dreams. I am an interdisciplinary sculptural artist working through metaphor for, and in relation to the body. Focusing on the softness found within tension, I celebrate connection through a combination of care and play. I have my BFA from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago and my MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art and have been wanting to partake in Praxis! Have you had any previous experience with Digital Weaving or Jacquard? I did! I fell in love with the TC2 in grad school at Cranbrook Academy of Art!!! Any goals for the residency you'd like to share? As part of an ongoing series, I have been traveling to all of the places that I've lived, setting up dark rooms in the closets or hallways of my queer friends' houses and documenting them in their outdoor spaces. An image showing up slowly on a wet plate, further distorted through weaving, built thread by thread but at the same time translating the most possible information thanks to the TC2. Instead of an image existing on the surface these images would be made whole, made sculptural. Connect with Eel via instagram @eelcostello Amy, it was great to see you back for another residency! Your use of multiple wefts and dedication to get through all of your warp was so fun to watch :)
Weaving on: Lou Joining us from: Twin Cities, Minnesota Tell us about yourself and what led you to the residency? I primarily needle-weave sculptural physical and psychological landscapes onto old nets. I’m interested in the TC2 as a means to add thematic depth as a two-dimensional counterpoint to that work. Have you had any previous experience with Digital Weaving or Jacquard? I had my first exposure to the TC2 last year at Praxis. This year, thanks to a brief refresher @LMRM, I felt much more prepared. So much yet to learn—access to this incredible loom is a gift! Any goals for the residency you'd like to share? Intrigued by what I saw as anthropomorphic form on an airport subfloor, I wanted to weave a human-built landscape as an alternate, image-based point of shared humanity. Connect with Amy via instagram @amyusdin, Website: amyusdin.com Eva, it was so great to have you here from Canada! We loved seeing your coral and ocean weavings come to life. Thanks for chatting with us everyday :)
Weaving on: Lou Joining us from: Calgary, AB, Canada Tell us about yourself and what led you to the residency? I’ve been weaving since 2017, and have loved digital weaving since I first tried it in 2019! Mostly I weave simple patterns and often weave in the Theo Moorman technique, gravitating to text work and symbolism. Digital weaving is a fun way for me to explore more complex patterns and play with textures. I’ve wanted to come to the Praxis workshop for years to use the jacquard and explore new visuals! Have you had any previous experience with Digital Weaving or Jacquard? Yes, I learned to weave on a jacquard during my BFA at AUArts, and have also woven on a compu-dobby at a residency in Denmark last year! Any goals for the residency you'd like to share? I’m hoping to explore as many visuals as I can during my residency, specifically exploring 2-weft patterns! Connect with Eva via instagram @evabirhanu, Website: www.evabirhanu.com Ailene, it was so great to have you here at Praxis! Your multiple weft weavings really brought the shadow and stone to life!
Weaving on: Collin Joining us from: Long Beach, CA Tell us about yourself and what led you to the residency? A few years ago, my predominately photo-based practice was pried open when a loom showed me new ways to elevate my otherwise two-dimensional work. Since then, I've been looking forward to further explore weaving and take what I learned to new levels. Have you had any previous experience with Digital Weaving or Jacquard? Yes! I took John Paul Morabito's class at SAIC in 2021. Any goals for the residency you'd like to share? I'm working on a serious of work surrounding the topic of grief and how it lives in the body. A lot of the files I brought to weave are images I've taken in graveyards over the years where I play with shadow and stone. Connect with Ailene via instagram @ailene.devries Kristi, it was so nice to have you as a resident before you traveled to Iceland! We loved seeing the dialogue and text messages translate into weaving :)
Weaving on: Lou Joining us from: Toronto Tell us about yourself and what led you to the residency? I am an interdisciplinary artist from Whistler BC, Canada. My practice consists of text-based fibre works that draw from personal interactions mediated through the screen. Through the tactility of the soft, cozy, and handmade, I use touch to speak further about my fear of intimacy while exploring questions such as: Can the screen mediate our interactions and foster meaningful connections? What do we lose or gain from virtual communication? I discovered Praxis while I was at a residency in Iceland. After falling in love with the TC2 loom, I have been on the hunt ever since! Have you had any previous experience with Digital Weaving or Jacquard? Yes, I learned how to weave on the TC2 while at a residency at the Icelandic Textile Center in July/August 2022. Any goals for the residency you'd like to share? The magic of residencies is the potential to unlock new ideas and ways of making work you hadn’t imagined before, so my goal is to see where the work takes me, meet new people, and try new things! Connect with Kristi via instagram @noinstikristi Emily had such a beautiful gradient warp!! Thank you for braving the storm with us during your residency :)
Weaving on: Collin Joining us from: Chicago Tell us about yourself and what led you to the residency? I am a weaver based in Chicago, the main container for my practice in recent years is The Weaving Mill, an industrial design/production/research/education studio which I cofounded and currently run. But! In the last few years, I've reconnected with Jacquard weaving (which I began working with in grad school at RISD), developing my own lines of inquiry on the TC2 which revolve around experimental warp setups and a painterly exploration of form and light and space and architecture. The residency is such a special opportunity to explore these ideas in a really fluid way. Have you had any previous experience with Digital Weaving or Jacquard? Yes! I teach digital weaving at SAIC and last summer I spent a month at the Iceland Textile Center, which is where I got my first taste of putting fun end&end warps on the TC2 :) Any goals for the residency you'd like to share? I'm excited to put on this warp and see what happens! One warp system is a 3-color linen gradient, the other is a fine cotton stripe. I'm interested in finding ways of bringing these two planes together in ways both sudden + gradual. The warp is usually the jumping off point for me and I am always glad when the material surprises me. I'm looking for those moments of surprise and a sense that the elements are coming together in an untroubled way, but still singing. And I'm very happy to get to know Praxis and spend some time by another Great Lake. Weaving on: Lou Joining us from: Cleveland Heights, OH Tell us about yourself and what led you to the residency? Carmen Lane recommended this residency & I was fortunate to see a demo through a Friends of Photography site visit and both sparked my interest in experimenting and expanding my practice - seeing my work in new ways. Have you had any previous experience with Digital Weaving or Jacquard? No Any goals for the residency you'd like to share?
