Tuija!!! You definitely made the most of your residency AND the most of Cleveland! Thanks for taking a dip in Queen Stinky and for coming by the Rust Best Fiber Shed vendor fair!
Weaving on: Collin Joining us from: Thunder Bay, Ontario Tell us about yourself and what led you to the residency? I’m an artist/educator with Nordic-Canadian roots living in Binesii-wiikwedong on the north shore of Lake Superior. My creative practice involves ethical foraging, gardening, plant dyeing, and handweaving. I feel grateful to live and work in a rural community surrounded by boreal forests and rich cultural heritage. In my work, I blend weft-faced weaving, specifically the Raanu technique, with modern technology. This traditional, Finnish practice allows me to translate the landscape into woven bands of colour. By blending old and new techniques, I hope to spark dialogue with my audience. Have you had any previous experience with Digital Weaving or Jacquard? I completed Digital Jacquard File Design 1 and 2 with Cathryn Amidei/Praxis in 2022. After that, I experimented with my ideas at Artscape Daniels Launchpad, under the guidance of Helen Weston and Emily Moffet. Unfortunately, the ADL Creative Studios shut down unexpectedly in August, further limiting access to this equipment. Luckily, in 2023, I was selected for an artist residency at the Icelandic Textile Center. During the residency, I continued experimenting with combining chunky plant-dyed wools with QR codes. Any goals for the residency you'd like to share? I aim to enhance my technique and refine my visual language using TC2 design. I will explore weaving with bulky wefts and experiment with combining plant-dyed colours with textured grounds. Additionally, I intend to try out new weave structures and continue creating sample files. To guide my imagery, I will also experiment with watercolour and abstract shapes through paper collages. I aim to blend analog techniques with digital methods and reduce my reliance on computer-based design processes wherever possible.
