Tuija!!! You definitely made the most of your residency AND the most of Cleveland! Thanks for taking a dip in Queen Stinky and for coming by the Rust Best Fiber Shed vendor fair!
Weaving on: Collin Joining us from: Thunder Bay, Ontario Tell us about yourself and what led you to the residency? I’m an artist/educator with Nordic-Canadian roots living in Binesii-wiikwedong on the north shore of Lake Superior. My creative practice involves ethical foraging, gardening, plant dyeing, and handweaving. I feel grateful to live and work in a rural community surrounded by boreal forests and rich cultural heritage. In my work, I blend weft-faced weaving, specifically the Raanu technique, with modern technology. This traditional, Finnish practice allows me to translate the landscape into woven bands of colour. By blending old and new techniques, I hope to spark dialogue with my audience. Have you had any previous experience with Digital Weaving or Jacquard? I completed Digital Jacquard File Design 1 and 2 with Cathryn Amidei/Praxis in 2022. After that, I experimented with my ideas at Artscape Daniels Launchpad, under the guidance of Helen Weston and Emily Moffet. Unfortunately, the ADL Creative Studios shut down unexpectedly in August, further limiting access to this equipment. Luckily, in 2023, I was selected for an artist residency at the Icelandic Textile Center. During the residency, I continued experimenting with combining chunky plant-dyed wools with QR codes. Any goals for the residency you'd like to share? I aim to enhance my technique and refine my visual language using TC2 design. I will explore weaving with bulky wefts and experiment with combining plant-dyed colours with textured grounds. Additionally, I intend to try out new weave structures and continue creating sample files. To guide my imagery, I will also experiment with watercolour and abstract shapes through paper collages. I aim to blend analog techniques with digital methods and reduce my reliance on computer-based design processes wherever possible. Hi Elizabeth! It was so great to have you and Zephyr at Praxis again! We already miss the sound of little nails clacking around the studio <3
Weaving on: Lou Joining us from: Bronx, NY Tell us about yourself and what led you to the residency? I am an artist and domestic worker (nanny) in New York City. A lot of my studio and participatory art practice focuses on the necessity to work for survival and its intrinsic connection to debt. Have you had any previous experience with Digital Weaving or Jacquard? I first encountered the TC2 at Oregon College of Art and Craft. Then later at Cranbrook and now at Praxis. I am so excited to come back to Praxis. I love creating text based work on the TC2 and challenge myself to learn something new every time. This residency is so unique and necessary because it provides access to this loom outside of an institutional setting. Thank you! Any goals for the residency you'd like to share? My first stay with Praxis in 2022 I worked on a woven documentary, ‘If You Don’t Owe Somebody’. This time around I’ll start the residency by revisiting a phrase I started thinking and working with in the pandemic: ‘Take Notice Give Care.’ I aim to work on this phrase and its ability to change order and meaning, e.g. 'Give Notice, Take Care’. Then I’ll continue my residency by exploring more text based work in relation to work and debt. Learn more at elizabethshoby.com, @shobystudio, or by emailing elizabethshoby@gmail.com Hey Katie!! It was a treat to see all of the structure changes contained within your weavings - we are hyped to see how the TC2 changes your practice at home.
Weaving on: Lou Joining us from: Chicago, IL Tell us about yourself and what led you to the residency? I utilize pattern-based tapestry as a drawing technique to make weavings about the connections between indigo and blue water, our changing shorelines, and the ways water reflects the sky. The woven waveforms are real and imagined—the beating of the loom akin to the ebb/flow of the tides. In drafting patterns, I create my own waves and ripples, translating my observations of the sun and moon sparkling off the water. The Jacquard allows me to convert my drawings directly into files for weaving, enabling me to be more experimental, and I’ve returned to drawing methods I haven’t used in ages. Have you had any previous experience with Digital Weaving or Jacquard? I took an independent study in Grad school with Christy Matson. Any goals for the residency you'd like to share? My files fall into three categories—Land forms, Reflections in the Water, and Human Environmental Impact. If I’m honest, I’m most excited about the sumi ink drawings I’ve been manipulating and converting into files for the Reflections in the Water set. They’re really different than the ones I’ve been making on my floor loom and have me wondering about the possibilities when I get back to my studio post residency! Find more of Katie on insta @katie.a.vota or at www.katievota.com K.E., welcome back to the Prax! We missed you and your dreamy floats! And are so extremely excited to see your residency take off!
Weaving on: Collin Joining us from: Western North Carolina Tell us about yourself and what led you to the residency? I'm currently working on a new body of work including woven and quilted pieces that are informed by growing up in the deep South. I'm excited to be returning to Praxis to push this work technically and to have the power to both reference traditional weaving patterns while manipulating structure and through imagery. Have you had any previous experience with Digital Weaving or Jacquard? I came to Praxis for the first time last May, and learned how to weave on the Jacquard with Deborah Bull during my time at SCAD in undergrad. My floor loom work over the last few years has largely been hand-picked, so it feels exhilarating (and much more efficient!) to work with the TC2. Any goals for the residency you'd like to share? Several of the pieces I'm working on will be cut and pieced together, in coverlet and Courthouse Steps-style patterns. I've made a few really large patterns with the shapes outlined in the weave to make cutting and sewing fairly precise. That being said, the last time I was here, I came in with so many ideas and felt more drawn to experimenting with unexpected things that happened while weaving. I'm looking forward to the loom surprising me again and following my nose. Get in contact with Kimberly at kimberly-english.com, @kimberly__english, or hello@kimberly-english.com Kimberly is also starting the pilot season of a weaving residency program called Tabby Studio in Canton, NC. You can learn more about it at @tabbystudio_wnc and tabbystudiownc.com <3 !!!!!!!! Clare, it was great to chat with you about the intersection of the internet & digital weaving + making! We are happy the DWL was able to aid in your research.
Weaving on: Collin Joining us from: Baltimore, MD Tell us about yourself and what led you to the residency? I'm an artist exploring the textual nature of textiles. Textiles contain a record of their own making, an inscription of the values held by their maker and beholder. Stories change with every writer and with every reader. Right now I'm investigating how the internet plays a role in this game of telephone. Jacquard weaving is closely related to computers-- not only is the process computer-driven, but the Jacquard loom's punch cards informed the first computers. I figured if I want my research to expand to digital spaces, using a digital way of making follows. Have you had any previous experience with Digital Weaving or Jacquard? I initially explored Jacquard weaving during my MFA at the Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia. Since then I've been building weaving files and dreaming about weaving them! Praxis is a great opportunity to put all of this research together. Any goals for the residency you'd like to share? I'm currently exploring how the infinite scroll of the internet relates to the finite scroll of a woven object. I'm interested in how the internet relays and transforms information. My research is grounded in the Antique Pattern Library, a digital archive of pre-internet hobby craft instruction books, and Susan Howe's /Spontaneous Particulars/, a poem/essay/manifesto about irl archival research. I'm interested in the friction between the material and digital worlds, and how that friction can emerge in the world as poetry, as objects. Weaving on: Collin Joining us from: Palo Alto, California Tell us about yourself and what led you to the residency? I've been eager to come back to Praxis DWL since my first residency in 2021. I'm delighted to return in 2023 for another experience with the TC2. Have you had any previous experience with Digital Weaving or Jacquard? My only digital weaving experience is from my two Praxis residencies, though I've woven on traditional looms for almost 30 years. Any goals for the residency you'd like to share? Much of my work is motivated by the intimate, tactile relationship between textiles and the human body. I'm excited to explore that relationship on the TC2, integrating bodily imagery with woven structures and textures. I hope to push some of the ways I wove photographic and abstracted images of the body in 2021 even further, and explore new ways of considering color, gravity, and dimensionality. Check out Jaya's last interview here and see more of her on Instagram @jaya.griscom or at jayagris.com Welcome back, Molly! We are glad you were able to explore weaving on both densities, and it is always great to have a Clevelander working in the DWL!
Weaving on: Lou Joining us from: Cleveland, OH See more of Molly on Instagram @ditthouse and at dittohouse.com Nicole! Welcome! Seeing your work on and off the loom was so special, especially the more architectural pieces.
Weaving on: Collin Joining us from: Brooklyn, NY Tell us about yourself and what led you to the residency? I'm excited to work on creating woven pieces for two projects: “Ancient Futures” & “Algorithmic Textures”. “Algorithmic Textures” is an on-going study and practice of creating digital textures using code-based languages and transforming them from digital matter to physical objects through various mediums including print, textiles, and paper sculptures. Specifically, I am exploring patterns with a focus on optical illusions, repetition, and perception through mathematical formulas and logic to entice a sense of algorithmic rhythms. I’m excited to explore new processes with the TC2! Have you had any previous experience with Digital Weaving or Jacquard? I am a generalist on the textile side, and this will be my first time using the TC2. Any goals for the residency you'd like to share? As a process oriented artist, I often work through visuals and designs by responding to the nature of the materials I am working with. This is why I am so excited by the TC2 loom, as a system that is part digital with a component of human to machine interaction, with the ability to inject moments of human decision making. I'm excited to have some dedicated time and space to make new work. Get in touch with Nicole below: @messinicole @craftwork_collective nicoleyimessier.com craftwork.today Helena, welcome back to the DWL! It missed you and your incredible knack for storytelling!
Weaving on: Lou Joining us from: Cleveland, Ohio by Lake Erie Tell us about yourself and what led you to the residency? I love string, structures, and stories. Praxis is a hub for looms and community -- a unique location to focus deeply on projects and weaving explorations. Have you had any previous experience with Digital Weaving or Jacquard? Yes, I've woven jacquard textiles before -- thanks to Kent State University and Praxis Fiber Workshop. Any goals for the residency you'd like to share? ~ Paint my warp with undersea imagery & dye skeins for weft. ~ Create a collaborative artwork with an oceanographer. ~ Explore whether warp & weft can be equals. ~ Weave delicate structures/patterns in 45 e.p.i. (ends per inch). ~ Design individual panels into a final single work of art. You can find more of Helena on Instagram @helenasarahrichardson Hello Kiara! Welcome to the DWL--we are so glad you were able to join us for indigo dyeing while you were here!
Weaving on: Collin Joining us from: Maryland Tell us about yourself and what led you to the residency? I am a Salvadoran-American artist from Maryland. I am interested in archival practices and the sentiment behind them. My process consists of using materials such as clay, glass, and natural fiber combined with labor-intensive techniques to reproduce objects of contemplation. Through material manipulation and abstraction, I create an ephemeral archive of sensibility and memory. An active reflection of a sense of loss and urgency to establish an archive. I am grateful to have the opportunity to begin a new body of work at Praxis Fiber Workshop after a short hiatus from making. Have you had any previous experience with Digital Weaving or Jacquard? Yes, my previous experience with TC2 was while pursuing my BFA at SAIC. Any goals for the residency you'd like to share? I recently traveled back to El Salvador after 10 years and took a bunch of film photographs during my stay. My plan is to hone in on my feelings of nostalgia of a place that feels so familiar yet estranged at the same time. As well as use the cotton yarn I brought back from my trip.
