Joining us From: New York, NY
On Loom: 1
Tell us about yourself and what led to the Residency?
I am Freda Xinyue Xia, a New York-based Chinese artist working across biomaterials, textiles, wearable sculpture, installation, and painting. My practice explores the body as a living boundary shaped by vulnerability, protection, rupture, repair, and transformation.
At Praxis, I’m excited to work with the TC2 loom and explore how my visual language can translate into woven structure. I hope to experiment with turning the contour-like lines, bodily maps, and material qualities in my current work into cloth through digital weaving.
Have you had any previous experience with Digital Weaving or Jacquard?
I have a background in textiles, hand weaving, machine knitting, fiber sculpture, and material-based surface development, but my direct hands-on experience with Digital Weaving and Jacquard is still developing.
Any goals for the residency that you would like to share?
My main goal is to learn the TC2 workflow and translate my drawings, biomaterial surfaces, and contour-like lines into woven studies. I hope to experiment with skin-like surfaces, bodily forms, density, transparency, and material contrast.
