Joining us From: Chicago
On Loom: 2
Tell us about yourself and what led to the Residency?
I am a digital and floor loom weaver, but I also work through embellishments, hand bags, code, and stitching. I mainly investigate the chaos of the politics of consumer culture. Most recently, I have been delving deeper into topics of economic democracy, self in capitalism, and society and activism during this Trump administration. At Praxis, I aim to continue merging my new research with weaving and its histories to create archival collages of brands, trash, ads, news articles, and photographs of the No Kings protest in Chicago, overlaid with my own text and questions of desire.
Have you had any previous experience with Digital Weaving or Jacquard?
Yes! I learned how to use the TC2 during my MFA program at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. I was able to have full access to the loom during my whole time at SAIC, so I ended up completely falling in love with it and I am so excited to be here to continue with my craft.
Any goals for the residency you'd like to share?
I think my main goal is to just fully immerse myself with the loom and space at the Praxis Lab. Not only do I want to play around with different structures, materials, and colors in my weavings, I also want to use the dye lab to create complex colors and patterns in my weft as I have not yet had the opportunity to do so in Chicago.
