Tell us about yourself and what led to the Residency?

I’m a fine artist and teaching artist based in Jersey City, New Jersey. My work is concept-driven and often combines textiles, writing, and mixed media. While I’ve been working primarily with mixed media and sublimation recently, I’ve been eager to return to weaving and explore it in a more abstract way. I first fell in love with Jacquard weaving during my final quarter at SCAD, but I haven’t had access to a Jacquard loom since graduating. When I discovered this residency, I was excited by the opportunity to return to a medium I loved while bringing it into my current practice.

Have you had any previous experience with Digital Weaving or Jacquard?

Yes, I have previous experience with digital Jacquard weaving while getting a BFA in Fibers from SCAD, where I worked on a larger computer-controlled Jacquard loom. This will be my first time working with the TC2!

Any goals for the residency that you would like to share?

My goal for the residency is to translate my abstract imagery and spiritual experiences into woven work. I’m particularly interested in experimenting with no-weave structures and distortion to create ghostly or fragmented imagery. I’ll also be incorporating personal photographs and poetry into pieces that serve as memorials for someone I lost. I find weaving to be a very meditative process, and I hope to use the residency as an opportunity to slow down, experiment, and develop a more personal relationship between my concepts and woven medium.
