Tell us about yourself and what led to the Residency?
I am a weaver & a PhD student in human-computer interaction at Carnegie Mellon University. My PhD research explores how everyday people resist harmful algorithmic systems, and as part of this I've been increasingly interested in destruction of technologies and how destruction and breaking structures can be forms of creativity and creation. At the same time, as I've learned more about weaving in the last few years, I've seen how these ideas are constantly present in fiber arts. Two weeks on the TC2 at Praxis presented an excellent opportunity for me to explore these ideas more in my weaving.
Have you had any previous experience with Digital Weaving or Jacquard?
My first introduction to digital Jacquard weaving was in a class here at Praxis this past December — I really enjoyed it and am excited to be back for more time on the TC2!
Any goals for the residency you'd like to share?
My main goals are to experiment, play, and soak in the dedicated time for focusing on my weaving practice, since it's not usually my full-time gig. Building on my research interests, I'm excited to explore various weaving structures and how they can be messed with and broken, especially when freed from certain structure & pattern constraints, to result in a textile that is both made and unmade, together and falling apart, at the same time.
