Welcome to the Dark Side, Tali (that is- the fiber world! hehehe). Thanks for continuing your weaving journey with us—and who doesn't love a painted warp!?
Weaving on: Lou Tell us about yourself and what led you to the residency? I am a Chicago born and raised nonbinary mixed media fiber artist. Have you had any previous experience with Digital Weaving or Jacquard? In May I graduated from School of the Art Institute of Chicago with an MFA in Painting and Drawing. Despite attending the school for painting, I was drawn to their fiber program as I had just learned to weave from Melissa Cody as her studio assistant. After my first semester taking the Jacquard class, I was hooked and became the first Painting and Drawing student to be the Jacquard Technician Assistant and Teaching Assistant. I am thirsty for all knowledge when it comes to fixing the looms, drafting weave structures, and meeting other fiber artists! Any goals for the residency you'd like to share? I am super excited to have had the honor of Hope Wang and LMRM helping me paint my own warp for the residency. My friend Xingyi Zhao generously showed me some drafting tips so I can begin to experiment with weave structures. I am also excited to spend the time with my perfect angel senior dog who is the ideal weaving companion but was not allowed on school premises. I usually show up to the loom super prepared with files, but after speaking to other artists who weave on a painted warp, I am trying not to over plan and respond to the warp as it advances.
