David, your personal history & stories about weaving were just as interesting as your work--thank you for sharing! And so happy you and Nomi could be here together.
Weaving on: Collin Joining us from: Denver, Colorado Tell us about yourself and what led you to the residency? I have always woven and wanted to explore this new technology and how it could move me forward in the expansion of my work as a fiber artist. Have you had any previous experience with Digital Weaving or Jacquard? I worked with a 20 Harness AVL Compu-Dobby for years designing textiles for both the residential and contract markets. I also designed jacquards for these markets. I wrote the curriculum to teach jacquard design for the Textile Surface Design Dept at FIT in NYC. Any goals for the residency you'd like to share? I want to integrate new weaves I developed on my AVL dobby loom into the art work that I created for this residency. Connect with David on Instagram at @dvbart_design

Hi Michaëlle! It was delightful to speak to you about personal histories & archives and their intersection at your weaving practice--cannot wait to see what you get up to next!
Weaving on: Lou Joining us from: Montreal, Canada Tell us about yourself and what led you to the residency? I recently graduated from Concordia where we have a huge Samtex Jacquard loom and honestly fell in love with jacquard looms. I really wanted to experience another type of jacquard and meet more weavers outside of Canada. Have you had any previous experience with Digital Weaving or Jacquard? Yes, I worked for the past years on the Samtex Jacquard look at Concordia and right before the Praxis residency, I had the opportunity to work at LMRM on their 4W TC2. Was truly a great experience and lovely meetings. Any goals for the residency you'd like to share? I honestly just want to enjoy myself and try long portraits/silhouettes from archives. Check out Michaëlle's website michaellesergile.com or Instagram @michaellesergile Jackie, we are so grateful you came such a long way to spend time here in Collinwood & experiment on our looms! And so happy you brought Audrey--what a magical little two weeks for the both of you!
Weaving on: Collin Joining us from: Melbourne, Australia Tell us about yourself and what led you to the residency? I am an a multidisciplinary visual artist and curator in Melbourne. My artworks address the relationship of technological simulation to lived experience. I focus upon contemporary perception, publicly contested space, historical memory and empathy. I completed my PhD 'Loss in a simulated environment' at VCA, University of Melbourne and undertook research in fabrication at RCA, London. My PhD focuses on photogrammetry and the kinds of perception that emerge through its processes. I am excited to realize 3D works in textiles during the residency at Praxis. Have you had any previous experience with Digital Weaving or Jacquard? A little through Praxis online workshops, which have been excellent. I have worked with Silver Reed knitting machines in the past. Any goals for the residency you'd like to share? I plan to experiment with translating my 3d works into textiles to create installations for exhibition. The connection between jacquard and the development of computing is fascinating and I will be thinking about how they relate. See more of Jackie on Instagram @jacqueline_felstead Thank you, Aoife, for bringing about some wonderful conversations regarding graphics, typography, & weaving and their intersections (and also for bringing this flag tape; it makes an awesome weft!!)
Weaving on: Lou Joining us from: Akron, Ohio (originally Dublin, Ireland) Tell us about yourself and what led you to the residency? I'm an Associate Professor at Kent State University's School of Visual Communication Design, and an interdisciplinary designer/artist. I'm interested in edges, thresholds and boundaries. In particular, in the edges of digital and material, language and landscape, meaning and ambiguity. My work explores the ways that memory operates on our experiences, weaving them into a fragmented inner landscape through which we make sense of ourselves and our relationships to others and the environment. Have you had any previous experience with Digital Weaving or Jacquard? Yes, at Kent State, where I learned first on the TC1 and then TC2. Any goals for the residency you'd like to share? A series of weavings inspired by a Roland Barthes quote “Reading does not consist in stopping the chain of systems, in establishing a truth… it consists in coupling these systems, not according to their finite quantity but according to their plurality…: I pass, I intersect, I articulate, I release, I do not count.” See more of Aoife on Instagram @patterns_and_puzzles or at www.kent.edu/vcd/aoife-mooney Erica! You are a legend of legends for tying on two warps. We enjoyed how much life your work brought to the DWL. From your words below, "vivid atmospheres of color" is certainly correct!
Weaving on: Collin Joining us from: Bay Area, California Tell us about yourself and what led you to the residency? My practice is about exploring how fiber can express the lived experience. I use autobiographical stories as a foundational place to make and create work from. I embrace vivid atmospheres of color, disintegrated patterns and gravitational cloth as a way to excise the demons living in the dark and expunge them into the saturation of technicolor dreams and manifestations of joy. Have you had any previous experience with Digital Weaving or Jacquard? Yes, I took a digital weaving class in undergrad at California College of the Arts. More recently, I spent 2 years in the Fiber and Material Studies MFA program at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago where I used the TC2 to create much of my work. It is wonderful to have access to this loom again and how special Praxis is for providing that. I am excited to weave again. Any goals for the residency you'd like to share? I would like to make more yardage of extra fringy colorful weaving and really expanding the fringe and floats and push this process. I am experimenting with disintegration and indecipherability of my patterns and color interactions. I am excited to use more colors, more weave structures and materials. See more of Erica on Instagram @ericadincalciart or at www.ericadincalci.com Hello Isabel, thank you for bringing such a light and spirited presence to the DWL! So happy you were able to take a small dip in Queen Stinky while you were here (and how refreshing to have another MICA Alum around! lol)
Weaving on: Collin Joining us from: Miami, Florida Tell us about yourself and what led you to the residency? I am a multidisciplinary artist and designer based in Miami, FL. I completed my BFA in Fiber Studies with a Minor in Experimental Fashion at the Maryland Institute College of Art in 2022. I approach creating work through a layering of different processes such as drawing, screen printing, weaving and garment design. I am interested in creating artificial realms inspired by the natural world that allow me to explore ideas of personal mythology, magic realism and ecofeminism. Have you had any previous experience with Digital Weaving or Jacquard? Yes ! when I was an undergraduate student at MICA Any goals for the residency you'd like to share? I want to continue exploring the relationship between drawing and weaving and the loss of visual information that occurs when I translate my drawings into a digital realm. See more of Isabel on Instagram @sirenastudio_ or at isabeloliva.squarespace.com Michèle!!!!! From student to resident! Talk about someone who made the most of their trip - it was exhilarating to see you do much while in Cleveland! We hope you enjoyed your time as much as we enjoyed having you <3
Weaving on: Lou Joining us from: Toronto, Canada Tell us about yourself and what led you to the residency? I am graphic designer by trade, with a love for textiles and fibre that has developed into an artistic career. For the past two years my artistic focus has shifted into working at a larger scale creating installations and wall pieces. I am currently incorporating weaving into my work, and I am fascinated by the infinite possibilities that weaving with the TC2 has offered and how it has somehow brought together both of my passions: design and textiles. Have you had any previous experience with Digital Weaving or Jacquard? Living in Toronto gave me the opportunity to learn and work on the TC2 loom that was available at Artscape Launchpad. Since 2022, I was able to learn hands-on and from observing other member weavers there, until its closure in September of 2023. I also had the opportunity to learn from Cathryn Amidei in 2023, when I attended her Jacquard Design I and II online courses, as well as the Intro to TC2 workshop she facilitated at Praxis that same year. Any goals for the residency you'd like to share? My work explores concepts like impermanence, fragility, ecology, conservation and our interconnection with nature. I use photographs taken of my natural surroundings, that I then intervene with different techniques or by combining unconventional weft materials when weaving, with the aim to bring awareness to nature’s fragility. I hope to continue these explorations, experimenting with different weft materials like cables and wires. See more of Michèle on Instagram @michele_guevara or at micheleguevara.ca Hi Celeste, so happy you were able to explore all of these structures while you were here! We cannot wait to see what happens when you bring digital jacquard weaving back to Florida!!!
Weaving on: Collin Joining us from: Tallahassee, Florida Tell us about yourself and what led you to the residency? Celeste Ivory is a visual artist focusing on unconventional textiles and sculpture. She holds a BA in Anthropology and MFA in Studio Art, both from Florida State University where she works for the FSU Department of Art. Ivory's work investigates contemporary and future craft; as a radical act, as a force working against consumerism, as a tool for material investigation, and as an act of community-building. She is currently developing a textile arts class for the Department and is thrilled to experiment with and explore the potential of a TC2 loom. Have you had any previous experience with Digital Weaving or Jacquard? I have not. Any goals for the residency you'd like to share? To investigate creative possibilities and experience digital weaving technology. Get in touch with Celeste on Instagram @celesteivory or at celesteivory.com Stefan! We can't believe you tied on not only one but TWO warps!?!! Legendary!
Weaving on: Lou Joining us from: Brooklyn, New York Tell us about yourself and what led you to the residency? Im an artist/designer based in Brooklyn. I was inspired to do the residency by seeing the great work of past residents like Hope Wang and Jovencio de la Paz. A lot of my work is jacquard based so I was excited to get the opportunity to have access to a jacquard loom again and explore some ideas I’ve been working on. Have you had any previous experience with Digital Weaving or Jacquard? I have extensive experience with designing and executing Jacquards and working on compu-dobbies, but not with a TC2 specifically. Any goals for the residency you'd like to share? Since this will be my first experience with hand woven jacquards, I’m just looking to learn and make the most of loom and my stay in general. I’m excited to explore Cleveland as well and the art scene there. See Stefan on Instagram @f_tefan or at stefansehringer.com Sarah! Your weavings were wonderfully optic and textured, not to mention homey! Cannot wait to see how that felted wefts turn out!!!
Weaving on: Collin Joining us from: Pittsburgh, PA Tell us about yourself and what led you to the residency? Hello! I am a textile artist and designer. My work goes on many directions such as memory, our natural environments, and materiality/color exploration. I love to experiment these concepts through different processes like weaving, drawing, and pattern. I've heard great things about Praxis and always wanted to weave on the TC2. Really glad that my first art residency is with you all! Have you had any previous experience with Digital Weaving or Jacquard? Yes! I have experience with programming on the Jacquard loom and using an AVL dobby loom. I was fortunate to be surrounded by peers and professors at RISD that taught me all I know :) Any goals for the residency you'd like to share? Trying to push myself to be a little more personal in my work. Thinking about my Korean and Moroccan identity and the role textiles has played in my life/family lineage. Also learning everything about the TC2! you can find me on insta: skhadrao and my website: https://skhadrao.cargo.site/ |
