Kristi, it was so nice to have you as a resident before you traveled to Iceland! We loved seeing the dialogue and text messages translate into weaving :)
Weaving on: Lou Joining us from: Toronto Tell us about yourself and what led you to the residency? I am an interdisciplinary artist from Whistler BC, Canada. My practice consists of text-based fibre works that draw from personal interactions mediated through the screen. Through the tactility of the soft, cozy, and handmade, I use touch to speak further about my fear of intimacy while exploring questions such as: Can the screen mediate our interactions and foster meaningful connections? What do we lose or gain from virtual communication? I discovered Praxis while I was at a residency in Iceland. After falling in love with the TC2 loom, I have been on the hunt ever since! Have you had any previous experience with Digital Weaving or Jacquard? Yes, I learned how to weave on the TC2 while at a residency at the Icelandic Textile Center in July/August 2022. Any goals for the residency you'd like to share? The magic of residencies is the potential to unlock new ideas and ways of making work you hadn’t imagined before, so my goal is to see where the work takes me, meet new people, and try new things!
