Tell us about yourself and what led you to the residency?

I am a mixed-media artist from Huntsville, Alabama and an MFA candidate at Arizona State University. My practice engages historically imbued materials with images and language of U.S statecraft, drawing from state and family archives and Black southern folk remedy and storytelling. Experimenting with new acts of contending with history is important to my practice, and I was drawn to Praxis due to the exciting ability to translate archival photography into woven form.

Have you had any previous experience with Digital Weaving or Jacquard?

No, only traditional floor looms and hand weaving

Any goals for the residency you'd like to share?

I am excited to experiment with legibility of image and meaning in this new way of making. I want to discover how images and information offer something new in alternate forms.
