Natalie it was great to have you back at Praxis! The images don't do the sparkly yarn justice ;)
Weaving on: Collin Joining us from: Akron, Ohio Tell us about yourself and what led you to the residency? I am an arts leader, curator, and artist living in Akron, OH. I have been a fiber artist for over 10 years. My work employs sloppy craft and non-traditional materials to create large scale weavings that highlight feminist concepts. I also serve as Director of Artist Resources at Summit Artspace, in downtown Akron, where I lead and implement artist-serving initiatives, including exhibitions and artist care programs. Although my primary practice is weaving on a floor loom, I have always enjoyed creating digital collages, so DW is a great marriage between the two that I have been hoping to try. Have you had any previous experience with Digital Weaving or Jacquard? No real experience from start to finish, this is my first time! Any goals for the residency you'd like to share? My goal for the residency was to translate themes in my current work into weaving that could be more image-based. I have been exploring the expectations, stereotypes, and shared experiences surrounding female sexuality. The work grapples with tension that many women feel daily about their identity, as we endure conflicting messages from mainstream media about our value in relation to sexuality. Themes like the virgin/ whore dichotomy, power dynamics, body image, sexual violence, and gender roles are all investigated throughout the body of weavings. It was fun to see your experiments in stuffing double weave and the use of different sized yarns.
Weaving on: Collin Joining us from: South East of Iceland Tell us about yourself and what led you to the residency? I am a transdisciplinary process driven designer from the San Francisco Bay Area now based in the South East of Iceland. My passion for textiles started at a young age, continued throughout my bachelor studies in Industrial Design at Massachusetts College of Art and Design and led me to Iceland where I participated in the textile & technology program Fabricademy at the Icelandic Textile Center. I am self taught in the world of tapestry and floor loom weaving and look forward to exploring more in depth the possibilities with digital weaving. Have you had any previous experience with Digital Weaving or Jacquard? Prior to moving to Iceland I had participated in John Paul Morabito’s online digital weaving workshops. At the Icelandic Textile Center I finally had the opportunity to use their sample TC2 loom to weave the file I had made in the workshops with John Paul and explore other complex woven structures. Any goals for the residency you'd like to share? I look forward to not only learning how to properly dress a TC2 loom, but build a swatch library of complex weave structures and continue to develop my Fluid Volumes collection in woven forms. Weaving on: Lou Joining us from: Rochester, NY Tell us about yourself and what led you to the residency? I am an artist and long-time weaver that has a deep appreciation for shaft loom weaving. The residency gives me an opportunity to take some of my ideas to another level. I am happy to see where this adventure leads me. Have you had any previous experience with Digital Weaving or Jacquard? I worked as a jacquard upholstery designer for over a decade and have continued to work on jacquard software for collaborations and to plan my complex shaft loom projects. Any goals for the residency you'd like to share? To create a new body of work and to see how I respond to working on the TC2 loom.
