Emily had such a beautiful gradient warp!! Thank you for braving the storm with us during your residency :)
Weaving on: Collin Joining us from: Chicago Tell us about yourself and what led you to the residency? I am a weaver based in Chicago, the main container for my practice in recent years is The Weaving Mill, an industrial design/production/research/education studio which I cofounded and currently run. But! In the last few years, I've reconnected with Jacquard weaving (which I began working with in grad school at RISD), developing my own lines of inquiry on the TC2 which revolve around experimental warp setups and a painterly exploration of form and light and space and architecture. The residency is such a special opportunity to explore these ideas in a really fluid way. Have you had any previous experience with Digital Weaving or Jacquard? Yes! I teach digital weaving at SAIC and last summer I spent a month at the Iceland Textile Center, which is where I got my first taste of putting fun end&end warps on the TC2 :) Any goals for the residency you'd like to share? I'm excited to put on this warp and see what happens! One warp system is a 3-color linen gradient, the other is a fine cotton stripe. I'm interested in finding ways of bringing these two planes together in ways both sudden + gradual. The warp is usually the jumping off point for me and I am always glad when the material surprises me. I'm looking for those moments of surprise and a sense that the elements are coming together in an untroubled way, but still singing. And I'm very happy to get to know Praxis and spend some time by another Great Lake. Connect with Emily via instagram @emmsplinter and @theweaving mill Website: www.emilyfranceswinter.com

Weaving on: Lou Joining us from: Cleveland Heights, OH Tell us about yourself and what led you to the residency? Carmen Lane recommended this residency & I was fortunate to see a demo through a Friends of Photography site visit and both sparked my interest in experimenting and expanding my practice - seeing my work in new ways. Have you had any previous experience with Digital Weaving or Jacquard? No Any goals for the residency you'd like to share? Work my up to using multiple colors while weaving to recreate a full color photographic image Get in touch with Amber via Instagram @ambern.ford Website: www.ambernford.com We love it when residents utilize the studio and community at Praxis. Chelsea did just that! It was so great getting to watch your weaving and print process!
Weaving on: Collin Joining us from: Houston, Texas Tell us about yourself and what led you to the residency? I am a weaver and also manage a fab lab at University of Houston so naturally I’ve been super curious about the TC2. Last summer, a friend told me about Praxis’ digital weaving residency & I applied right away. I am beyond excited to spend the next two weeks investigating this loom! Have you had any previous experience with Digital Weaving or Jacquard? No, none. Any goals for the residency you'd like to share? I like to weave overshot, and my aim is to incorporate these traditional structures into digital imagery. I don’t have much experience with a TC2 though so we will see what happens! Get in touch with Chelsea via Instagram @rosemarypress Alyssa, it was great to see your drawings come to life! The use of neon yarn was especially fun to see.
Weaving on: Lou Joining us from: Pittsburgh, PA Tell us about yourself and what led you to the residency? I recently finished my MFA at Ohio University - during my time there I visited Praxis during the FRONT Triennial with the Sculpture area. I was really fascinated by the TC2 and the possibilities it had to offer. Have you had any previous experience with Digital Weaving or Jacquard? No Any goals for the residency you'd like to share? Using a number of different tools, I am making physical the email attachments from the massive email dataset released in connection with the downfall of the Enron Corporation during the late 1990s. This consists of a wide range of files: menu templates, corrupted text files, AutoCAD models, and whimsical clip art. So, a goal for this residency was to use digital weaving as a tool to translate these files. It seems that there is so much to explore in terms of what the TC2 is capable of and I have only scratched the surface. I hope to work more with it in the future! Get in touch with Alyssa via Instagram @abkeil Website: http://abk.space Ari! It was so great to have you here at Praxis. We loved seeing your two warps and naturally dyed yarn!
Weaving on: Collin Joining us from: Phoenix Arizona Tell us about yourself and what led you to the residency? I am a mixed-media artist from Huntsville, Alabama and an MFA candidate at Arizona State University. My practice engages historically imbued materials with images and language of U.S statecraft, drawing from state and family archives and Black southern folk remedy and storytelling. Experimenting with new acts of contending with history is important to my practice, and I was drawn to Praxis due to the exciting ability to translate archival photography into woven form. Have you had any previous experience with Digital Weaving or Jacquard? No, only traditional floor looms and hand weaving Any goals for the residency you'd like to share? I am excited to experiment with legibility of image and meaning in this new way of making. I want to discover how images and information offer something new in alternate forms. Get in touch with Ari via Instagram @aribarley Rajasi was back for her second residency on Lou! We love to see returning residents come back! Thank you for spending time at Praxis.
